And so it begins…

17 July, 2010

Yesterday, as speculation was mounting on whether the federal election would be held on 21 or 28 August, Julia Gillard tweeted:

Don’t miss out on your chance to have a say in our future. Go to www.aec.gov.au JG

Today Gillard has seen the governor-general at Government House and is back at Parliament House for her press conference at midday. Only three minutes late, Julia Gillard has now announced the election will be held on the 21 August. Now I guess there will be a lot of “moving forward”….

Update: Writs will be issued 6pm Monday. So those not enrolled will only have till 8pm Monday to enrol.

Tony Abbott’s response: If we stay with Labor we’ll be moving forward to more debt, more waste and more boats. He promises not to bring back Workchoices for at least three years and he will not allow this election to be a scare campaign – which is why he makes the former statement.

Why is Abbott trying to scare people about the boats? How immoral! Political leaders have a moral obligation to help ease tension in the community by explaining that asylum seekers are seeking refuge from unsafe homelands and are NOT a threat.

On a community level, creating a welcoming environment is the first step towards a more inclusive society and thus avoiding social dysfunction that will affect the whole community.

Qld’s intake of refugees will be 13,750 in 2010-2011.

Refugees are incredibly resourceful and they should be given a chance to make a positive contribution to the community.

Perhaps Aussies have lost their sense of community. We no longer really know our neighbours.

Come on Abbott and Gillard! Don’t increase our pathetic little fears and insecurities. Encourage our sense of community.
