Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia

25 June, 2010

Yesterday was an historic day for Australia. Julia Gillard is now the XXVII and first female Prime Minister of Australia. I only wish that she could have become Prime Minister under different circumstances. Labor could win the coming election with either Kevin or Julia as the Prime Minister – at least they had better, I don’t want to live in an Australia with Abbott as Prime Minister. Gillard will be a great Prime Minister. The only thing that is worrying at the moment is that while she has no truck with fear-mongering over asylum seekers, Gillard says she understands Australians’ concerns over boats arriving. What could they possibly be concerned about? Surely they are just ignorant.

The dumping of Kevin Rudd still feels a little too raw for me to celebrate Julia Gillard’s leadership just yet. For now I’d prefer to reflect on the achievements of Kevin Rudd: the disposal of the lying, hateful rodent, John Howard; ratifying Kyoto; and the Apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples…. The list goes on, but it would be better for Kevin to outline some of his government’s achievements, here or below.

Shortly after this speech, Rudd bravely fronted for question time as the Member for Griffith which he plans to remain beyond the coming election.

Update. Gillard’s first polling at Pollytics. It seems not many would describe Tony “Australian’s for Honest Politicians Trust” Abbott  as “someone you would trust”. I can’t believe anyone would.

Paid parental leave. This is huge.

    Indeed. Killing “Workchoices” too.

Did you catch Steve Fielding’s disgusting comments in the PPL debate? An unlikely duo of Barnaby Joyce and Sarah Hanson-Young joined forces to thump him.
