Steve Fielding finds out if the Christmas Island detention centre is “like palace”

28 January, 2010

Steve Fielding (the leader of Family First) announced via twitter and a press release that he was going to inspect the Christmas Island detention centre. Why?

I don’t know if the detention centre on the island is like palace [sic] or not. All I know is the boats keep on coming.

It looks more like a cage than a palace. Steve could have stayed home and read this article complete with pictures to find out this information. But there is another reason:

It’s important for an independent to take a look at what’s happening on Christmas Island because asylum seekers have become a political football in recent years.

That’s right, it’s important for Steve to see what is happening so he can get into the game and start kicking this political football. He doesn’t like to be left out of these things.

I want to find out once and for all what is happening on the island and then work a way forward with the government.

This isn’t an easy issue because on one hand it’s important we protect our borders but it’s also crucial we meet our international obligations.

I want to work with the Immigration Minister to make sure we deal with asylum seekers in a fair and just way.

We could just adhere to Article 31 of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. That would be treating asylum seekers in a fair and just way. What do you think Steve?

Apparently, Steve will be speaking to ABC News Radio around 17:45 eastern from Christmas Island. Wonder which team he will be kicking for?

Post interview. Steve believes that conditions are so good on Christmas Island that it is a pull factor for asylum seekers. He also said that asylum seekers are guaranteed being resettled from the detention centre within three months. No mention of it being like a palace but I wonder if the conditions would be good enough for his family.

From the ABC.

Steve dribbles again.

Update. Unbelievable. Check the reaction on twitter (search twitter: @senatorsteve) to the following tweets from Fielding, a true twat:

Conditions on Christmas Island are very good for detainees. http://bit.ly/9o4pTr

watching a boatload of 43 asylum seekers arrive on Christmas Island

And then this: just been using a nice new apple mac inside the detention centre. Not bad at all!

Fielding lives in some weird parallel universe that only he can see. This is the conclusion I have reached because it is the only plausable reason why he is so deliberately stupid.

The most useless politician on the planet.

He seems to labour under the impression that government is all about him.

Deliberately stupid, useless – all on the money. And like the Abbott it’s all about him.

Forgot to mention Scott Morrison had tweeted his intention to go to Christmas Island before Steve. These hypocritical church-attending politicians really shit me.

Abbott is now asking, was my Australia Day speech really divisive, hurtful and deliberately crafted to play the race card?

The 400 million dollar architecturally designed prison on Christmas Is. built for dangerous never-to-be-released convicted criminals is a top spot for yet to be arrested international war criminals who engaged in the illegal invasion of Iraq without the approval of the UN.

Is this the new Guantanamo for convicted International genocide and war criminals.

It could become home for people like Bush, Blair and Howard.

Was Fielding simply sent ahead by them to try out the bunks?

And who was the *#!* who let him out again?

Hear, hear, fairgo! And what’s all that rot the Opposition sprouts about ‘protecting our borders’? Against whom? That’s a political statement to create fear in the electors.

If the 4500 asylum seekers who risk their lives on leaky boats are threatening, how about the millions who fly in each year or the ones whose visas have run out and are evading their responsibilities?
