Will the cock crow a third time Mr. Beattie?

30 July, 2009

Tony Fitzgerald has replied to Peter Beattie’s comments following his inaugural lecture. Mr. Beattie, suggested the unflattering remarks from Mr Fitzgerald were motivated by the former Premier’s association with Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen and his lack of support for Mr. Fitzgerald to take the office of Chief Justice.

Mr. Fitzgerald described the claims as:

“faintly amusing”

He also said that Mr Beattie was:

“simply obeying his political instincts – obfuscate, spin, evade, deny, blame someone else, create a distraction to deflect attention from the real issue, etc.”

“Queenslanders have seen it all before and hopefully won’t be duped.”

If Anna Bligh, the Premier of Queensland, does take corruption seriously it will be interesting if there are more political corpses. There are allegations against Terry Mackenroth or it could just be more tit for tat following Gordon Nuttall’s conviction.

As an aside, it is interesting to note that the some of the good people of Kingaroy still think that Joh was above reproach. An associate of Ozpolitik reports that there are or were moves to immortalise Joh in the form of a statue (or something). It would make more sense to quitely forget the (more probable than not corrupt) racist.
