Dangerous Liaisons: Operation Capri report

22 July, 2009

The Crime and Misconduct Commission Queensland today released its report from Operation Capri. The report identifies that while police officers made use of their powers granted under the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000 they failed to acknowledge or exercise their connected responsibilities. Twenty-five officers are implicated in misconduct.

The report can be read here.

While it is proper and admirable for Queensland Police Union General President Ian Leavers to defend the members of the Police Union his comments represent some archaic thinking.  The Courier Mail reports Mr. Leavers as saying, “Corruption is not an issue in the Queensland Police Service”.

Terry O’Gorman, Vice President of the Queensland Council for Civil Liberties and Principal of the law firm Robertson O’Gorman, said such a response from the union was ‘pre-Fitzgerald’ and similar to that made of the Moonlight State report.
